Royal Caribbean Changes Tip Program and Begins Automatic Gratuity Charge on March 1st

Posted February 19, 2013

Royal Caribbean just announced a change in their onboard gratuity program. In the past, Royal Caribbean provided the following suggested gratuity amount for members of its service staff onboard:

Waiter: $3.75 USD a day per guest

Assistant Waiter: $2.15 USD a day per guest

Head Waiter: $.75 USD a day per guest

Housekeeping staff: $5.00 USD a day per guest

Suite Housekeeping staff: $7.25 USD a day per guest

These amounts were again a suggestion, with the final amount still at the discretion of the passenger. Royal Caribbean did not automatically add this to onboard accounts, but dispersed envelopes for passengers to hand to their service personnel.

However, a new automatic gratuity program will be effective on March 1, 2013. This gratuity replaces their previously recommended gratuity guidelines and will apply to all guests who did not prepay gratuities before February 28, 2013.

Their new service recognition process will include a $12.00/day per person charge ($14.25 for suite guests) to each passenger's SeaPass account. This gratuity is shared by Dining Services Staff, Stateroom Attendants, and other Housekeeping Services Personnel that work to enhance your cruise. The daily automatic gratuity amounts are recommended and are based on customary industry standards.

Royal Caribbean prides itself on its onboard service, but if a passenger feels they did not receive satisfactory service they can request to modify the daily amount by visiting Guest Services during their cruise.

Guests may still prepay their gratuities at the same amount prior to sailing and will not have a daily amount charged
