Escorted Hike and Picnic Adventure on Banks Peninsula

Experience the remarkable scenery, rich history, and diverse wildlife of Godley Head on this full-day guided hiking adventure across one of the most scenic coastal areas of Banks Peninsula. Located just 30 minutes from Christchurch, this ancient volcanic landscape is known for its dramatic cliffs, breathtaking ocean views, fascinating heritage, and some of the region's finest walking trails. Covering approximately 9 km (5.5 miles) with an elevation gain of around 350 m (1,150 ft), this hike offers an enjoyable challenge for active travelers.

Your day begins with a comfortable small-group transfer by minibus to the charming seaside suburb of Sumner. Before setting out on the trail, you'll have time to relax with a hot beverage at a local cafe before continuing to Taylors Mistake Beach, where your coastal walk begins.

Follow well-maintained walking paths as you take in panoramic views of Pegasus Bay, the Pacific Ocean, Lyttelton Harbour, and, on clear days, the distant Southern Alps. Throughout the journey, your knowledgeable local guide will bring the landscape to life with stories about the peninsula's volcanic formation, Maori heritage, early European settlement, native wildlife, and Christchurch's long-standing ties to Antarctic exploration.

Along the route, discover one of New Zealand's best-preserved World War II coastal defence sites. Explore the historic gun emplacements and military buildings while learning how this important installation helped safeguard the Canterbury coastline during the war.

You'll also visit the historic Scott's Cabin, constructed for Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition. Although the cabin traveled to Antarctica aboard the Terra Nova in 1911 with the intention of serving as a meteorological research station at Granite Harbour, changing expedition plans meant it was never assembled. It was returned to New Zealand still in its original packaging and now stands at Godley Head as a lasting tribute to Christchurch's important Antarctic heritage.

The walk continues to the secluded Boulder Bay, a beautiful beach that can only be reached on foot. Here you'll enjoy a freshly prepared picnic lunch surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery before taking time to relax and appreciate the peaceful surroundings. Afterwards, follow the scenic coastline back to Taylors Mistake Beach before returning to Lyttelton.
