Porto (Oporto), Portugal

Portugal's second largest city, and one of the most beautiful cities on the Iberian Peninsula. The town owes it charm to its dramatic position above the river, with little gabled houses closely terraced down the hill. It owes its wealth and fame to Port wine, first discovered and exported by the British in the early 18th century. With a population of nearly 500,000, the city today is a busy commercial and industrial center, and a major port.
